The Sleepy House
Type of Work: Spatial Design, Residential
Duration: 3 months
Designer: Nicole Prasetia
Project Overview:
For this project, the brief directed us to design a residency for an ongoing artist residency program that would last for 6 months. The artist I choose to design for is a visual artist that, Ross Tran.
To approach this I first looked into his lifestyle, habits, needs, routine, and preferences and was inspired by his dedication to his work as an artist, educator, and content creator. To him, there is no such thing as a work-life balance only a work-life synergy where everything overlaps with each other.
Because of this, I decided to pull inspiration from a Japanese concept called Ikigai which describes one's life purpose as the coming together of all elements. To further this concept I used visually the overlapping forms as well as overlapping function of work and rest within the confines of this residency.

Is a person whose life revolves around art, the thing he loves. His work is about art, in his free time he spends it doing art and when he's with his friends they create art together. All these different parts of his life revolve around creation.
Section A-A
Ikigai,
the overlapping parts of our lives give us a sense of purpose, a dream. The design intent is to further this overlap both visually and functionally in an interior space.

Final Remarks
This project was my introduction to spatial design and it's where I was introduced to most of the basic processes of design. My approach and research could've been more meaningful for the artist and I could've been braver in regard to concept. Everything about this project could've been so much more but I don't regret anything about it.
It was my first implementation of a concept, my first lesson on perspective, my first introduction to AutoCAD, and my first design brief ever. It's what taught me that learning is a continuous journey and to be open to every and all criticism.
